Over 30,000 law enforcement officers will be deployed throughout France on Sunday evening due to concerns of potential unrest following the release of election results, where there is a possibility for the far-right party to achieve a significant presence in parliament.
Gérald Darmanin, interior affairs minister, announced that approximately 5,000 police officers would be stationed in Paris and its vicinity with the intention to prevent either radical factions from exploiting the situation and causing disorder.
Four individuals were detained after allegations of an attack on government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot and her team while setting up campaign materials in Meudon, near Paris. Among those arrested was a minor. When confronted by youths about vandalism, the party workers emphasized that such actions were prohibited without resorting to aggression. A police response occurred within five minutes of the incident.
"Violence is not an acceptable solution," Thevenot stated in her message on social media. "Despite recent incidents involving me as a person of color, I am committed to my campaign work."
Marine Le Pen's National Rally party candidate Marie Dauchy also reported being attacked by a market vendor during the election period. Nicolas Conquer from The Republicans shared on social media an assault he endured while handing out promotional material in Cherbourg.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal expressed disapproval of any forms of violence or hostility that may arise, emphasizing their absence within a democratic system. With the election's outcome potentially granting the far-right party significant parliamentary representation, both President Emmanuel Macron and his centrist coalition have strategically withdrawn numerous candidates in an attempt to limit this potential shift in power. The possible number of seats obtained by these parties remains uncertain but is estimated by polls from Challenges magazine at up to 220 out of the total 577 available seats.
Marine Le Pen suggested that a high voter turnout might result in her party securing an absolute majority, stating it was crucial for citizens to participate and effect change where they feel discontented currently.
