Geraint Thomas, who clinched victory at the 2018 Tour de France, compared the organizational structure within Ineos Grenadiers to that of a coalition government. The Welsh cyclist expressed his fluctuating experiences during this year's race.
Thomas, finishing third in the Giro d'Italia and currently positioned 25th overall with a nine-and-a-half-minute deficit from leader Tadej Pogacar of UAE Emirates, is primarily supporting teammate Carlos Rodríguez. Despite his role within Ineos Grenadiers, the team has not yet secured success in any Grand Tour since Dave Brailsford's promotion to director of sport at Ineos in December 2021.
When asked about adapting to ongoing management changes within the organization, Thomas commented: "It presents challenges." He contrasted his previous experience with former team leader Dave Brailsford, stating that decisions were more direct and straightforward before the current structure's complications arose.
The management landscape shifted abruptly as Steve Cummings was unexpectedly excluded from participating in this year's race, a decision described by Pidcock as unlikely to influence team performance.
Throughout the Tour de France, Thomas experienced unpredictable highs and lows compared to previous performances, where he maintained consistent results each day. While acknowledging his disappointment at missing out on Olympic participation, he expressed confidence in his ability to contribute significantly during this year's men's road race due to his extensive experience and knowledge of racing dynamics.
