A northern German city has become the first to prohibit a classroom gesture that resembles a far-right Turkish symbol due to its potential for misunderstanding. This hand signal, known as the "silent fox" in Germany and elsewhere, typically involves holding up two fingers with one finger upright representing an animal's ears while the other two fingers are pressed against the thumb symbolizing closed lips. It has traditionally been employed by educators to request student silence during lessons.
However, city authorities in Bremen have raised concerns that this gesture might be mistaken for a controversial far-right Turkish signal. The latter, referred to as the "wolf salute," is reminiscent of an extremist symbol and has recently come into focus due to its use by Turkish footballer Merih Demiral after scoring during Euro 2020.
Despite not being banned in Germany, similar to neighboring countries Austria and France, the gesture's adoption was criticized following this incident. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser condemned using a major sporting event as an opportunity for racism, prompting responses from Turkey and Uefa leading to Demiral's temporary ban.
The debate over this hand signal has intensified amidst discussions about cultural sensitivity in Bremen's educational sphere. Although the gesture is prevalent among educators worldwide under different names such as "whispering fox" or "listening coyote," its use raises concerns when compared to Turkey's national symbol, which has been associated with extremist groups and historical acts of terrorism.
The Bremen city council concluded that the gesture is incompatible with local values, prompting a shift away from traditional teaching methods involving this signal toward alternative means of maintaining classroom order.
