Early Friday morning, a drone exploded over central Tel Aviv, causing damage to buildings and resulting in one fatality. The Israeli military believes the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is of Iranian origin and was launched from Yemen.
"An initial review suggests that this incident was caused by a UAV falling," an Israeli military statement said. "No alarms were triggered." In response, air patrols have been increased in the region but no new civil defense measures are being implemented at this time.
The Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the explosion and stated that their forces targeted a significant location within Tel Aviv's Jaffa area. This event follows an incident earlier in which Israeli authorities intercepted what they suspected to be a Houthi drone approaching Eilat, a Red Sea port.
The ongoing conflict between the Iran-aligned Houthis and Israel has led to repeated maritime attacks by the Houthis targeting ships passing through critical sea lanes such as the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The violence in these areas has had considerable negative impacts on business at Eilat's port.
The Houthi statement attributed this action to Israeli strikes on Gaza, which have resulted in significant loss of life since an attack by Hamas that began on October 7th.
In Tel Aviv, the aftermath of the drone explosion left a scene marked by shattered glass and concerned citizens near the affected building. The incident took place around 3:15 AM local time at a location close to an embassy compound within the city's central district. Police and emergency services responded swiftly, with reports of one casualty - a man in his fifties who was discovered deceased with injuries consistent with shrapnel damage inside another building nearby.
The local population experienced vibrations from the blast and reported witnessing windows breaking on surrounding structures. Despite these disturbing events, authorities urge caution amongst residents to avoid contact with any potential explosive remnants at the scene.
