Incredible images recently released by Survival International reveal the presence of an uncontacted Indigenous tribe known as Mashco Piro in the Peruvian Amazon's remote areas. The photos show these people living near a river close to where logging companies have access, with more than 50 individuals spotted over recent days.
The Mashco Piro, who inhabit an area between two natural reserves, are rarely seen and seldom interact with nearby communities like the Yine or outsiders. However, their presence has become increasingly noticeable in light of recent developments involving logging activities within their territory.
According to Survival International, several loggers have established timber concessions in these regions, including over 200 kilometers of roads constructed by Canales Tahuamanu for their operations. Despite the Forest Stewardship Council's certification of this company's logging rights, concerns regarding its impact on local communities and uncontacted tribes persist.
The Peruvian government received reports in mid-June from residents about sightings of Mashco Piro along the Las Piedras river, approximately 150 kilometers away from Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios's capital. These instances are not isolated to Peru; similar accounts have emerged across the border in Brazil as well.
Rosa Padilha of the Brazilian Catholic bishops' Indigenous Missionary Council highlighted that these communities often seek refuge from logging activities and engage in traditional practices, such as collecting Amazon turtle eggs during this season. The images serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by uncontacted tribes like Mashco Piro amidst ongoing deforestation efforts.
