A Polish national is facing charges for an assault on Mette Frederiksen, Denmark's prime minister, which occurred during a public event in Copenhagen earlier this month.
On 7 June, in the middle of the day within a busy city square, Frederiksen was approached and struck by another individual on her right arm. Despite sustaining minor injuries to her neck area, Frederiksen did not experience any significant harm.
The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, is represented by Henrik Karl Nielsen in legal proceedings. In an official statement provided to the Associated Press, Nielsen confirmed that he would contest the charges on behealf of his client, stating a lack of memory regarding the event.
Following the attack, Frederiksen sought medical attention and subsequently withdrew from her scheduled engagements, including participation in political events linked to upcoming parliamentary elections. The suspect has been charged with an offense targeting someone performing official duties or serving as a public representative. Should he be convicted, the penalties could range from monetary fines to imprisonment for eight years. A hearing is scheduled for late August in Copenhagen courts.
Reports by Danish news outlets suggest that the assailant may have been under the influence of substances at the time of the attack.
