A significant win for Labour was celebrated as a symbol of hope by those who fear the rise of far-right parties in Europe, with Donald Trump still leading polls to become US president next year. However, Britain's resistance against this wave may be more practical than ideological. Nigel Farage’s Reform party managed to secure 14% of votes nationwide, closely trailing Germany's AfD (Alternative for Deutschland), which gained 16% in recent EU parliament elections.
The AfD now sends a notable group of MEPs to Brussels, while under the UK’s first-past-the-post system, Reform Party received more than 4 million votes but only secured five seats in Parliament. This small representation will strive to influence government policy and impact the Conservative party's reconstruction after their recent loss. However, they possess limited actual power due to the UK’s voting system.
"If the UK employed a different polling system, we would observe more fragmentation similar to other European countries," observed Marta Lorimer from Cardiff University. The current electoral structure in Britain not only reduces the political impact of minority parties but may also discourage voters from backing them at all.
In contrast, European elections allow for coalition-building which increases the appeal of smaller parties. This is evident as the vote splinters and affects larger parties like Labour who were expected to offer change after a long Conservative government tenure. Farmer's success may be attributed to recent political trends seen across Europe, where voters are now more inclined towards various political profiles, not just traditional left or right ideologies.
This shift has also benefited parties like the UK Green party and Liberal Democrats, which saw significant gains in the recent elections. Proportional representation systems have even led to left-wing governments in Europe over the past two decades, despite a rise in far-right sentiments. Farmer's Reform Party may draw inspiration from other populist parties across Europe but must now broaden its appeal and focus on more than just Brexit issues alone.
Following Labour's victory, power transitioned smoothly with outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt both acknowledging the win while expressing support for Starmer’s commitment to public service. This display of respect towards democratic processes and voters is a refreshing change in recent British politics, which has often been characterized by contentious exchanges between political leaders.
