Israel confirms interception of Houthi-launched missile targeting southern city of Eilat

Israeli forces announced they intercepted ballistic missiles launched by Houthi fighters in Yemen aiming at Eilat, as retaliation for previous airstrikes on the port city of Hodeidah.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree, representing the Houthi military, claimed that multiple ballistic missiles were launched toward Eilat and an American vessel in the Red Sea, both attempts being deemed successful by his group.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported their Arrow 3 defense system successfully thwarted missiles targeting Eilat outside of Israeli airspace on a Sunday morning. Warning sirens were sounded to alert local residents about potential falling debris from the intercepted missiles.

Israel's strikes near Hodeidah followed previous attacks against oil facilities and power stations, resulting in three fatalities, 87 injuries, and visible smoke plumes above port facilities as stated by Saree.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified Israel’s choice of targets at Hodeidah' Marketplace, emphasizing the city's role in military operations and international shipping routes. Concerns for humanitarian aid delivery arose due to these attacks on the crucial port facility as highlighted by EU statistics.

Saudi Arabia refuted involvement in the strikes at Hodeidah while denying use of their airspace, despite previous conflict with Houthi fighters. The group's retaliatory drone attack on Tel Aviv led to Israeli defenses being questioned by authorities due to perceived oversight.

The Houthi stance was to continue attacks as long as Israel persisted in its actions against Gaza, which has seen significant casualties over recent months and disruptions to global trade routes in the Red Sea. Tensions between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants have escalated recently, with fears of an expanded regional conflict.

Prime Minister Netanyahu faced mounting domestic pressure amidst ongoing negotiations for a potential ceasefire deal involving the release of captives from both sides in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and a temporary halt to hostilities. His upcoming US visit, including meetings with President Joe Biden and Congressional addresses, is anticipated to play a role in potentially de-escalating tensions.

A wildfire erupted near Israeli settlements in the Golan Heights after fragments from an intercepted missile were discovered nearby shortly before Netanyahu's departure on his diplomatic trip.
