In response to escalating tensions, the Israeli military executed an evacuation directive from two neighborhoods in southern Gaza previously designated as humanitarian zones, compelling thousands of Palestinians to vacate their homes amidst commencing attacks.
The local civil defense organization reported approximately 400,000 individuals residing in the eastern regions of Khan Younis were impacted by this mandate. The military cited plans for a counter-operation against Hamas fighters within Khan Younis and adjacent Al Mawasi areas, alleging these zones served as launchpads for rockets directed towards Israel.
Among those affected is Osama Qudeih, who recounted their displacement to the Associated Press: "We were called upon to leave, our children accompanied us out of concern. With no secure location remaining in Gaza, we wandered through streets uncertain of where to seek refuge."
Another resident shared her exhaustion after experiencing repeated relocations. Kholoud al-Dadas questioned the global response while clasping her offspring: "Where is help when every day brings displacement for us and our children? What has become of our world?"
According to Gaza health officials, at least 37 individuals succumbed during the assaults surrounding Khan Younis, with anticipated additional fatalities yet to be confirmed. The casualties include those possibly buried in rubble or found on roadside due to obstructed access for ambulances.
As per reports from local news agencies, post-evacuation bombardments were immediately initiated by Israeli forces after distributing leaflets instructing residents to vacate Khan Younis. The destruction was visually evidenced through smoke billowing over demolished buildings.
Nasser hospital in Khan Younis requested blood donations as the facility treated wounded individuals who had fled from the bombings.
Prior to Monday's strikes, Khan Younis witnessed significant devastation amidst ongoing conflict; yet numerous inhabitants returned to erect tent camps within eastern Khan Younis after being displaced elsewhere in Gaza. Displaced Palestinians were observed using various modes of transportation, including cars and donkey carts, to flee the area.
Palestinian authorities, international organizations, and the UN have declared that no sanctuary remains available within Gaza, pointing out that previously designated humanitarian zones continue to be targeted by offensives. An attack on Al Mawasi earlier in the month resulted in numerous casualties as Israeli forces claimed they were aiming at Hamas's military leadership.
Since the beginning of Israel’s campaign against Gaza since October 7 last year, over 39,000 fatalities have been reported by the Palestinian health ministry, with more than 89,000 injured after a series of intense assaults in recent weeks.
A UN convoy carrying aid to Gaza City was targeted on Monday as conveyed by Philippe Lazzarini, head of Unrwa. He described an incident where Israeli forces opened fire on the vehicle, which had not been properly authorized for its route past a checkpoint near the river in Gaza: "While there are no casualties at this time, our staff needed to take cover from the gunfire while traveling in clearly marked UN vehicles."
In light of such incidents, Jordan's foreign minister Ayman Safadi expressed his disapproval and referred to it as a violation of international law.
