Japanese health professionals plan to introduce an additional heatstroke category, reflecting increasing concerns that extreme temperatures are straining medical services akin to those seen during natural disasters. The Japanese Association for Acute Medicine announced their intention to implement this change later in the year with hopes of decreasing mortality rates due to severe heat-related incidents.
In response to recent reports, Tokyo officials have advised citizens to limit outdoor activities amidst a heatwave that has led temperatures soaring past 40C, surpassing the "extremely hot" classification set by meteorological authorities. In this same period, six fatalities were reported in Tokyo due to the relentless heat.
Over recent years, there has been an alarming rise in heat exhaustion-related deaths, which now approach 1,500 annually as of 2022. This escalation suggests that heatstroke poses a significant risk comparable to major natural disasters. Consequently, the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine emphasizes caution against unnecessary outdoor excursions.
The current categorization system includes three levels: mild (symptoms like dizziness and sweating), moderate (headaches, vomiting), severe (loss of consciousness and convulsions). The newly proposed "most severe" category will be reserved for individuals exhibiting a core temperature exceeding 40C alongside communication difficulties.
Authorities have recommended that citizens seek refuge in cool environments, such as air-conditioned public buildings or designated "cooling shelters." Such measures were adopted last year and aim to provide temporary relief during heat advisories. A 60-year-old woman named Hisako Ichiuji shared her experience of finding solace at a nearby shelter amid the sweltering conditions near Tokyo Tower.
According to the Japan Times, emergency services have seen an uptick in heatstroke cases since last week's peak temperatures, with numbers quadrupling from previous weeks and representing nearly double the amount recorded during the same period last year. The elderly population, accounting for approximately 60% of these cases, has been particularly affected by Japan's intensifying heatwave, largely attributed to global warming and a strong high-pressure system in the Pacific region.
Tokyo Fire Department officials have urged residents to be mindful of their health during this challenging period and use emergency services responsibly. Resident Sumiko Yamamoto echoed these concerns, stating that she has noticed an increase in temperature since last year and finds it difficult without air conditioning.
