Kawhi Leonard has decided to withdraw from the US men's basketball team scheduled for competition at the Paris Games, citing his right knee inflammation as a factor preventing participation. This would have marked his first appearance at an Olympic event.
During the last part of the previous season with the Los Angeles Clippers, Leonard missed 12 games due to this condition. The determination regarding Leonard's involvement was made jointly by USA Basketball and the Clippers organization.
USA Basketball released a statement explaining that despite Leonard having engaged in several productive practices recently during an event held in Las Vegas, they chose to prioritize his preparation for the upcoming NBA season over Olympic participation. The decision respects what both entities believe is best for Leonard's long-term athletic endeavors.
As a result of this development, USA Basketball has been given the option to substitute another player onto the 12-man roster for the Paris Games. Discussions have taken place with Boston Celtics guard Derrick White as a potential replacement, according to an individual with knowledge about these conversations who spoke with the Associated Press.
Initially expressing that his knee condition was under control and he had resumed basketball activities approximately three weeks prior in preparation for the Olympics, Leonard's withdrawal occurred just before two pivotal events – a US exhibition match against Canada and an ensuing trip to Abu Dhabi. These stops are scheduled to precede their arrival at the Paris Games.
With Kawhi Leonard out of consideration for this Olympic team, the United States currently has 10 players eligible for selection in these circumstances. The absence of Kevin Durant due to a calf strain also impacts the roster dynamics as he was not present during a four-day training camp that concluded recently in Las Vegas.
