Kenyan authorities reported on Saturday that more bags filled with dismembered female body parts were found at a rubbish dump. This distressing discovery is part of an ongoing investigation following previous findings of similar bodies in sacks within garbage.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced the recovery of additional five bags, three containing female body parts, from an abandoned quarry near Nairobi's Mukuru slum. The DCI assured the public that a comprehensive investigation will take place to explore all possible leads.
Recent events in Kenya have heightened concerns over law enforcement activities. Last year, mass graves were uncovered in a nearby forest, resulting from a tragic cult-related incident. Additionally, recent anti-government protests led to numerous fatalities and raised accusations of police misconduct.
Conflicts have escalated around the Mukuru site where the bodies were discovered. Reports indicate that police intervention was used to manage a public gathering there. The Independent Police Oversight Authority (Ipoa) is investigating these matters while examining claims of abductions related to prior protests, although no direct link to the dumped remains has been established yet.
There have been calls on social media for recognition as victims of gender-based violence. In response, Kenyan President William Ruto emphasized that any loss of life is unjustifiable and promised accountability for those involved in such crimes. Despite criticism against law enforcement agencies regarding abuses, convictions remain infrequent.
National police chief Japhet Koome stepped down amidst public dissatisfaction over the handling of protest-related deaths. In response to these developments, President Ruto has attempted to mitigate ongoing unrest against proposed tax hikes, now retracted from the agenda. The DCI's statement echoes a call for thorough investigations into recent incidents and their possible connections to other cases of violence and abuse in the country.
