For the remaining residents of Kurakhove, a small city in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region that lies merely seven miles from the frontline, the potential worst-case scenario wasn't far-fetched. The nearby towns and cities, including Avdiivka and Bakhmut, had been utterly destroyed by Russian forces before succumbing to ruin.
Nearby, in Kurakhove hospital, Liudmyla Alyokhina, 78, recounted how her son's fate hung uncertain amidst the ongoing war. Her house was demolished by Russian attacks and now uninhabitable. The possibility of his return to a non-existent home haunted her.
Ukraine had witnessed only minor territorial gains in most parts of this year, with Avdiivka's capture being the last significant advance since February. However, Russia seemed intent on escalating its assault by employing new glide bomb technology - modified Soviet-era weapons now fitted with foreign components and capable of causing extensive damage.
The situation worsened when Pokrovsk found itself targeted in a "double-tap" missile strike that killed five individuals and injured 41 others, leading to pleas from the head of Pokrovsk's military administration, Serhii Dobryak, for residents not to evacuate without a plan.
In contrast, Andrii Khuzhela was determined to hold on to his remaining livestock despite losing most of them in recent attacks. Meanwhile, Serhii Rachenko struggled with providing sustenance for the surviving animals amidst dwindling resources and a rapidly deteriorating environment.
As life continued amidst chaos, evacuation trains remained essential routes for those seeking refuge from the hostile conditions. In such circumstances, residents like Evgeniy Shintsov were forced to make difficult decisions about whether or not to leave their homes behind in hopes of a safer future elsewhere.
