Lawson Criticizes Marshals' Track Crossing as 'Dangerous' at Mexico City Grand Prix
Liam Lawson expressed strong criticism after narrowly avoiding a collision with two marshals during the Mexico City Grand Prix, describing the incident as dangerous and unacceptable. The Racing Bulls driver had started 15th but sustained damage on the first lap, prompting an early pit stop.
As he exited the pit lane, Lawson encountered two marshals crossing the track while clearing debris from the opening corners.
“Are you kidding me? Did you just see that?” he said over team radio. “I could have hit them.”
After the race, Lawson was frustrated that the marshals were not warned of his early pit stop, leaving them at risk. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” he said. “There were two people running across the track. It was extremely dangerous. There must have been a miscommunication, but this shouldn’t happen.”
He emphasized the need for immediate review: “Marshals shouldn’t be on a live track like that. We’ll need an explanation to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
The FIA confirmed it was investigating the incident, clarifying that marshals had been instructed to retrieve debris only after all cars passed the corner but that those instructions were later revoked when Lawson’s position became clear.
Meanwhile, race winner Lando Norris dismissed boos from the crowd, seemingly related to a previous team decision that some fans deemed unfair.
“They have the right to react how they want,” Norris said. “I don’t mind—it makes it more entertaining for me.”
