Local authorities in Ancash have discovered a well-preserved American mountaineer's remains near a high-altitude camp situated at 5,200 meters above sea level. The deceased individual, William Stampfl, had been attempting to ascend Mount Huascarán, standing at an impressive height of 6,768 meters.
The body was found by the police team on a Friday, with ice and cold temperatures contributing to its well-preserved condition. It is notable that Stampfl's driver's license had been accompanying him during this treacherous expedition.
Mount Huascarán attracts numerous climbers annually, assisted by local guides who typically spend about a week reaching the summit. William Stampfl was part of a group with his companions Matthew Richardson and Steve Erskine when they set out on their journey in 2002. While Erskine's remains were discovered soon after the incident, Richardson is still unaccounted for.
The body has been transported from the mountain down to the city of Huaraz over the weekend by a team composed of guides and police officers. The morgue in Huaraz now houses the deceased's remains.
Recent global warming effects are causing glaciers around the world to melt, subsequently uncovering previously concealed human remains. This phenomenon has led to an increase in the number of discovered bodies from hikers and climbers who were buried by natural events such as avalanches or snowstorms.
North-eastern Peru is home to several mountains that are popular among climbers, including Mount Huascarán and Cashanal. In May, similar circumstances occurred with the discovery of an Israeli hiker's body in the same region nearly a month after he was reported missing.
