Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Faith Kipyegon both achieved remarkable performances at the Diamond League track event held in Paris on Sunday, setting new records. The Ukrainian high jumper successfully surpassed a longstanding record that had been unbeaten for 37 years, while Kenya's middle distance runner reduced her own world best from last year by an additional fraction of a second.
Mahuchikh, who had recently become the world champion in this discipline, expressed joy upon reaching a new height of 2.10 meters. This feat surpassed her previous attempt and marked a significant moment for Ukraine's contribution to athletics history. The record she broke was previously held by Bulgaria’s Stefka Kostadinova at 2.09 meters in Rome back in 1987.
The 22-year-old athlete, along with Nicola Olyslager who is also a world indoor champion, managed to clear the initial height of 2.01 meters on their second attempt together. However, it was Mahuchikh who ultimately overcame the subsequent challenge at 2.03 meters before achieving victory after her first jump at this new peak.
The event continued with Kipyegon's performance in the middle distance run. With the assistance of two pacemakers, she completed the race in a time that was marginally quicker than her previous best by seven hundredths of a second, which is now regarded as an outstanding achievement considering her victory at the most recent Olympics.
Meanwhile, Jessica Hull from Australia secured a new national record while ranking second overall with 3 minutes and 50 seconds and 83 milliseconds, positioning it among the top five ever recorded times in this event. Laura Muir of Britain also made history by setting a brand-new British record, completing her race in 3 minutes and 53 seconds and 79 milliseconds, finishing third overall. Surprisingly, two out of the thirteen athletes who competed did not attain their personal best times.
