Rory McIlroy once again found himself facing familiar challenges at the Renaissance Club during the second round of the Scottish Open. Competing for his first time since narrowly missing out on claiming another major championship, he managed a total score of 131 to accompany his initial opening 65 in the tournament.
McIlroy had briefly held a two-shot lead with five holes remaining during last month's US Open but faltered at crucial junctures including bogeying on three consecutive holes towards the end, which included missing a short par putt on the 16th hole. This cost him valuable ground as he finished just one stroke behind Bryson DeChambeau.
During Friday's competition, McIlroy faced similar difficulties as he missed both his approach shots from comparable distances during the 16th and subsequent holes to drop three positions relative to Ryder Cup teammate Ludvig Åberg. He reflected on his misread of the green, stating, "Yeah, a misread [on 16]. I read the putt straight but it didn't play as expected. It went a little left to right."
McIlroy acknowledged that had he played more consistently over the previous two days, he might have been closer to Åberg's score or potentially even better positioned. Despite feeling that there were opportunities missed on several holes during both yesterday and today's rounds, McIlroy expressed optimism about his ability to improve as the weekend progressed. "I saw a few scores of 62 and a couple in the low-to-mid 60s," he noted, expressing that matching these performances would be crucial if he were aiming for contention leading into Sunday's final day.
McIlroy concluded with an acknowledgment of his resilience during this period, having endured a challenging series of events over the past three weeks and finding himself back in action at yet another significant golf tournament.
