Authorities in Cologne executed evacuations involving three hospitals and numerous residences following the unearthing of an undetonated WWII aerial mine during construction on a new health facility campus.
The 1,000kg American ordinance, featuring both forward and rear detonators, is expected to be rendered safe later this week. Since groundwork began approximately six months ago due to valid concerns about unexploded remnants potentially surfacing at the site, meticulous planning for an extensive evacuation has been ongoing among city officials.
A 500-metre perimeter around where the munition is discovered marks a designated safety zone by local authorities who report that experts have suggested more unexploded aircraft bombs might be present at this site, necessitating further digging to ascertain their quantity and condition for safe removal.
The citywide evacuation effort - involving over 1,300 orderlies from the municipality along with police officers, firefighters, emergency service workers, local media outlets without specific campaigns, in addition to around 800 volunteers who visited residences for confirming citizen cooperation – has been characterized by officials as unprecedented since WWII.
Two hospitals were evacuated on the previous day while a third was cleared early this morning amid instructions given out, prompting about tens of thousands to vacate their apartments based upon official communication.
Meanwhile, transportation routes including traffic and public transits got rerouted away from affected vicinity as part precautionary measures. Those patients requiring urgent care were swiftly relocated across the city using more than three hundred ambulances or moved to a temporary refuge at nearby educational institutions which had been closed for that day, acting as an alternate dwelling site outside of danger zone temporarily housing evacuees safely till they can return home.
City authorities also took extra steps by elevating one existing structure with intensive care units (ICUs) – incurring significant expense over weeks - to accommodate between 50 and 70 critically ill patients whose immediate transfer elsewhere could have posed grave health risks, including victims suffering from severe burns or those in coma status due to bomb discovery.
