Reform MP Steps Aside Amid Pandemic Business Conduct Probe
James McMurdock, a Reform Party MP, has relinquished the party whip while facing scrutiny over claims regarding his business dealings during the coronavirus pandemic.
Lee Anderson, the party’s chief whip, confirmed the decision on Saturday, stating it was linked to allegations expected to appear in a national newspaper. According to Anderson, the accusations involve "business conduct during the pandemic and prior to his election as an MP."
McMurdock, 39, was relatively unknown in politics before narrowly winning the South Basildon and East Thurrock seat by 98 votes in last year’s general election.
In the past, he acknowledged a conviction for assaulting his girlfriend at the age of 18. Reform previously described him as someone who had "made mistakes, learned from them, and moved forward successfully."
The situation poses a challenge for Nigel Farage, who has already seen one of the party’s five MPs, Rupert Lowe, depart following a dispute. The party later gained Sarah Pochin in a byelection.
McMurdock has not yet commented publicly, and it remains uncertain whether the party or another body is examining his conduct.
