Zharnel Hughes believes he can emulate Linford Christie by claiming 100m gold for Britain at the upcoming Olympic Games next month. However, first, he aims to address his rivalry with US's Noah Lyles, whom he describes as "raising all the red in me."
In a previous clip featuring their interaction on Netflix's track and field series Sprint, Lyles made remarks that Hughes took seriously. When Hughes expressed readiness to compete, Lyles responded with a comment about being an athlete: "If you don’t have main character energy, track and field isn’t for you."
Hughes acknowledged realizing what Lyles had said after watching the Netflix series. He admitted it was challenging but used this motivation to propel himself on the track during competition. Hughes addressed his rivalry in a Vita Coco event, stating that while he doesn't condone Lyles's comments for psychological manipulation, he is prepared and ready for their upcoming face-off at the Olympics.
Hughes also discussed recent performances by fellow competitors Tetsile Tebogo and Louie Hinchliffe in London. With a British record of 19.73 seconds in the 200m race, Hughes finished third behind them but still sees value in the upcoming matchup against Lyles at the Olympics.
Following recovery from a hamstring injury that caused him to miss training and European championships last month, Hughes is back on track with his preparations for Tokyo 2021. He also mentioned having Linford Christie's victory in Barcelona during his phone's gallery as motivation.
Hughes expressed disappointment over a false start at the Tokyo Olympics but credits his world bronze medal win in Budapest last year for restoring his confidence and solidifying his standing within Team GB. Despite encountering some challenges after switching allegiances to Britain from Anguilla, he has since become an integral part of the team.
