Over half a century after its inception, Milan's Pinacoteca di Brera gallery is set to unveil a new museum dedicated to contemporary art later this year. This expansion has been delayed multiple times due to various complications such as the discovery of hazardous materials and issues with the facility's infrastructure.
The newly established museum, adjacent to the main gallery, will have its grand opening on December 7th, coinciding with a significant cultural event in Milan: the annual opera premiere at La Scala. The director taking the helm for this project is Angelo Crespi, succeeding James Bradburne who was unable to continue due to term limits.
The original institution of Brera, founded in 1809, has been a bastion for renowned art pieces by artists including Canova, Caravaggio, Raphael, and Hayez. However, many contemporary works were previously stored away from public view. The new facility at Palazzo Citterio is already attracting visitors with its temporary exhibits and plans for future events such as summer concerts in the garden.
