At least 229 lives have been lost due to recent heavy rainfall-induced mudslides in southwestern Ethiopia, marking the most devastating such disaster in the country's history.
Local authorities in Kencho Shacha Gozdi district issued a warning on Tuesday that additional fatalities may be reported as volunteers tirelessly use rudimentary tools and their hands to locate survivors from previous mudslides.
Rescue operations continue despite challenges, with many individuals still missing, according to Markos Melese, the director of the disaster response agency in Gofa Zone. The heartbreaking reality includes children mourning over lost family members during this harrowing ordeal.
In an emotional plea, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, offered condolences and support to the grieving families. "Our hearts and prayers are with the families [of the victims]. We stand in solidarity with the people and Government of Ethiopia as rescue teams continue their arduous efforts."
The region's history bears witness to its susceptibility to such natural disasters, having experienced similar events before. The current catastrophe further emphasizes the urgent need for improved infrastructure, especially considering the impact of seasonal rains in southwestern Ethiopia and previous tragedies in other regions like Wolaita.
