Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian's lead over conservative contender Saeed Jalili increased early on Saturday, surpassing 2 million votes as ballot counting continued in Iran's presidential runoff election.
Pelezhihan, a cardiologist by profession and experienced legislator, witnessed enthusiastic supporters gathering in the streets of Tehran before dawn to celebrate his expanding lead over Jalili, known for his close ties with Iran's supreme leader.
Mohsen Eslami, representing the election commission, stated Pelezihan had garnered 11.1 million votes compared to Jalili's 9 million, but did not provide a total number of voters at that time.
This second round of voting occurred on June 28th and marked the lowest turnout in Iranian history since the revolution of 1979. Officials have traditionally used voter participation as an indicator of public support for Iran's Islamic Republic, which has faced challenges due to economic sanctions, widespread protests, and stringent measures against dissenters.
Reports from government sources suggested a higher turnout rate during the election process, with state television broadcasting footage showing modest lines at certain polling stations. However, online content depicted some locations without voter presence while surveys conducted in Tehran indicated lighter traffic despite heightened security measures on the streets.
A total of 61 million Iranians aged 18 and above were eligible to vote, including approximately 18 million individuals between 18 and 30 years old. The voting period was extended until midnight with hopes of increasing voter participation.
Former president Ebrahim Raisi's unexpected passing in a May helicopter accident made him a potential successor as Iran's supreme leader, an influential position held by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The winning candidate might shape the country's foreign policy approach towards either confrontation or collaboration with Western nations.
Raisi was known for his involvement in controversial actions during the 1980s mass executions and subsequent crackdowns on dissent following Mahsa Amini's tragic death, a young woman detained by authorities over allegedly improper headwear attire. Iran's direct attack on Israel earlier this year marked its first such action while militias supported by Tehran intensified their regional activities.
Iran continues to enrich uranium at high levels and maintains a significant stockpile, raising concerns about potential nuclear weapon development. The election campaign also focused on the implications of a possible Donald Trump victory in the US presidential race.
