Research Indicates Severe COVID-19 Infections May Trigger Brain'sup 'Control Centre''Inflammation': Study Findings

Severe COVID-19 cases may trigger brain inflammation within its "command center," researchers indicate. Higher resolution MRI scans of 30 individuals hospitalized due to severe illness early on, prior to vaccines' widespread availability, revealed indications of brainstem swelling and structural irregularities – a small yet pivotal structure that controls vital bodily functions such as respiration, cardiac rhythm, and blood pressure.

The images imply severe COVID-19 can instigate an immune response leading to inflammation in the brain stem region; this damage may underlie persistent symptoms lasting several months after patients are released from hospital care.

“Observing anomalies within regions of our brains linked with respiration strongly suggests enduring discomfort is a consequence of post-Covid infectious disease," stated Dr Catarina Rua, neuroscience specialist at the University of Cambridge and primary author on this investigation.

The initiative was undertaken before comprehensive understanding regarding long COVID - an extended aftermath illness with estimated impacts upon millions in England/Scotland territories alone – became clear to medical experts or public health advisors alike, though many enduring the condition report persistent breathlessness and fatigue. “We didn't specifically study those suffering from prolonged Covid, but they often experience persistent effects like breathlessness and exhaustion – symptoms bearing resemblance to the physical complaints these extremely ill individuals exhibited six months subsequent their hospitalization," Rua pointed out. "This prompts us with questions: could people dealing with long-term COVID possess any brainstem alterations?”

Rua, along with her peers used high resolution 7 Tesla MRI equipment for brain examination in these patients – showing enough detail to identify signs of inflammation and microstructural disruptions within the brain stem. All included individuals were severely ill upon entering hospital during initial pandemic phases

MRI scans underscored abnormalities connected with swelling related to immune reactions, spotted several weeks post-hospital admission into multiple regions of brainstem - these changes persisted in later examinations conducted months following their stay.

Possible link between damage within the brain stem and debilitating mental health issues faced by some patients was also considered – with a notable pattern observed: individuals presenting highest levels of inflammation, as well demonstrated most severe physical complaints along with elevated depression/anxiety symptoms. “While this investigation doesn’t conclusively establish the root causes for long-term COVID syndromes; it does signal out one potential culprit responsible for some experienced side effects," Professor Paul Mullins, expertise holder on Neuroimaging from University of Bangor stated. “Not entirely clear if these discoveries shed light towards effective remedial measures post occurrence or acquisition during initial Covid infection and response; yet they might suggest the importance to curtail inflammatory responses upon first encounter with COVID-19."
