Rory McIlroy has responded to critics of his US Open performance at Pinehurst, after the Northern Irish golfer's trophy slipped from his grasp during agonizing moments on Sunday.
Former coach Hank Haney and television analyst Smylie Kaufman – both with ties to Tiger Woods and previous PGA Tour experience respectively – offered a critical view of McIlroy's approach. Additionally, Harry Diamond, Rory's caddie, faced scrutiny after McIlroy bogeyed three out of his last four holes at the championship.
During an interview for the first time since Bryson DeChambeau won a major earlier in the year and surpassed him at Pinehurst, Rory expressed frustration towards negative comments directed towards Harry Diamond specifically. "Hank Haney has never been in my position," McIlroy said. "Smylie was once there with me on 18 [when I missed a crucial putt]. But just because he may not vocalize as much as other caddies, it doesn't mean his words aren't heard."
Rory criticized those who only offer negative comments when things go wrong for him. He pointed out that they are often absent during times of success and highlighted Harry Diamond's contributions in previous victories. "If you wouldn’t take advice from these individuals, then I wouldn’t either," McIlroy added.
After the US Open, Rory spent a few days in Manhattan, reflecting on the experience. Since his last major win in August 2014 at Dubai Desert Classic, he hasn't suffered such dramatic losses. "I'll learn from this and hopefully use it to my advantage," McIlroy said.
Reflecting on past tough moments in his career, including a missed putt in a playoff during his rookie year, Rory acknowledged the resilience that has helped him succeed despite challenges. He also attributed his recent loss at Pinehurst to paying too much attention to Bryson DeChambeau's performance towards the end of the tournament.
Looking ahead, McIlroy is preparing for Royal Troon next week and a Scottish Open defense in East Lothian. "I see it as another opportunity," he said. "My golf has been strong lately, and I aim to handle this upcoming event better than before."
