Keir Starmer has assured his continental counterparts during his inaugural international summit hosted domestically, marking an end to longstanding contentious relations. The Labour Party's leader engaged with leaders from over 40 nations at the European Political Community gathering held at Blenheim Palace on Thursday, expressing a desire to rekindle "trust and friendship" within these relationships.
British officials anticipate that this event could serve as a platform for discussions concerning immigration, commerce, defense, and agriculture with the EU. Starmer seeks prospective arrangements involving repatriating migrants from the continent and exploring collaborative opportunities in various sectors.
In his address at the summit, Starmer expressed an intent to rebuild "mutually beneficial" connections between Britain and its European counterparts: "We aim to work with all of you to renew our shared interests and trust. Together, we can enhance the quality of life across Europe." He added that he aspires for strengthened past relationships while establishing new ones, highlighting a commitment not to utilize public funds on unfeasible propositions such as his predecessor's Rwanda initiative.
He emphasized an adherence to human rights and international law principles by rejecting the previous administration's contentious strategies: "My personal understanding of these fundamental values has been informed since I was young, through studying in a Leeds library over four decades ago." He acknowledged the value they continue to provide him.
European leaders attending the summit expressed optimism regarding potential revisions to Britain's relationship with the EU. Despite this positivity, it was made clear that negotiations are yet to commence. David Lammy, UK foreign secretary, confirmed on Thursday: "We have not entered into discussions for a trade agreement... We aim to discuss various issues such as immigration and security within the European framework."
