Study Reveals Water's Boiling Point Falling Shy of 100°C Amidst Storm Ciarán

In November, many residents of Britain experienced less than ideal tea brewing conditions due to an unprecedented low atmospheric pressure from Storm Ciarán.

This drop in barometric pressure led to water boiling at temperatures lower than what some experts suggest for optimal flavor extraction from tea leaves.

Researchers from the University of Reading, documented in a weather-related publication, noted that on the storm's morning, Reading experienced water reaching boiling point at 98 degrees Celsius.

Normal atmospheric pressure variations are commonly seen during inclement weather events like Storm Ciarán.

On November 2nd, PhD student Caleb Miller conducted experiments to measure changes in the properties of water under low atmospheric pressure conditions within his department's laboratorenas he remarked: "I saw a chance for some practical observations on boiling point behaviors during times of decreased air pressure."

By utilizing temperature sensors and standard electric kettles, Miller’s team could compare their findings with previous data collected under different atmospheric pressures.

Additionally, they integrated meteorological information from roadside weather stations in southern England and the University Atmospheric Observatory at Reading to evaluate the storm's impact across a broader region.

The researchers observed how this pressure low moved throughout the area during typical breakfast hours, an occurrence that is uncommon in densely populated areas. Alec Bennett, another study contributor, explained: "We are aware of how pressure affects boiling points among mountaineers, but Storm Ciarán affected a much larger populace."
