Hurricane Beryl has made landfall near Houston, Texas, as reported by the US National Weather Service. The storm is currently moving north-west at a speed of 10mph with sustained winds reaching up to 75mph (120km/h).
Residents along the coastal regions have been advised to take necessary precautions, including boarding windows and evacuating beach towns in preparation for the storm. A tornado watch has been issued for an expansive area covering over 7 million people.
Meanwhile, flood warnings are also in effect for parts of eastern Texas due to expected heavy rainfall near the Texan coast. The NHC recommends that residents within the designated storm surge evacuation zone should start making preparations.
The state's lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick, has noted that there seems to be a lack of movement from people in areas prone to flooding and damage due to Hurricane Beryl. Over 120 counties have received disaster declarations as the storm intensifies.
Hurricane Beryl made its second landfall on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, following a destructive path through parts of the Caribbean and Mexico. The NHC predicts that once Hurricane Beryl reaches Texas, it will weaken and transition into a post-tropical cyclone, affecting regions further north in the US midwest with rain and potential flooding.
The National Oceanic and Atmospherinasat's (NOAA) records show that since 1850, there have been 109 tropical systems making landfall in Texas. The most recent was Hurricane Nicholas, a category 1 hurricane, which resulted in two deaths and caused around $1 billion in damage.
