A redeveloped version of Hurricane Beryl is projected to strike south Texas early Monday morning as a Category 1 storm, bringing potential winds, rain, and tornadoes to the densely populated Houston region. Over one hundred counties were declared disaster zones on Sunday following remarks by the state's lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick.
On Saturday, Lieutenant Governor Patrick urged residents in the affected area to finalize their preparations for the storm. “Beryl is a determined hurricane and incoming winds coupled with possible flooding represent a significant threat to Texans within its path,” he warned.
Patrick stressed: "Texans must pay close attention, follow guidance from local officials, and make preparations immediately for Beryl's expected arrival in the early hours of Monday."
The US National Hurricane Center continues to issue updates as Beryl approaches after having previously battered the Caribbean. It was one of the earliest Category 5 hurricanes on record to form in the Atlantic and underscores a season anticipated to have more activity due to climate change impacts.
"Residents residing within this storm surge watch area, especially those in mandatory evacuation zones, should initiate preparations promptly as local officials may request their relocation," stated Michael Brennan, the National Hurricane Center's director during a conversation with the Houston Chronicle. "Be ready to potentially leave your home at any moment, particularly for residents of barrier islands."
The port in Corpus Christi was shuttered on Sunday due to expected gusty wind conditions, and many coastal ports serving the oil industry began closing or limiting vessel movement.
Aerospace company SpaceX's Starbase facility, located on South Padre Island, announced via a NASA social media post that it had begun preparations for Beryl by retracting its cranes and moving Ship 31 back to the production yard in anticipation of the storm.
Over the past week, Beryl has traveomed through the southeastern Caribbean as a Category 4 hurricane, resulting in ten fatalities, widespread destruction, and displacement of hundreds. Subsequently, it made landfall on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula as a Category 2 hurricane before moving north-westward across warmer ocean waters as a tropical storm.
As Beryl reconstructs itself in the Gulf of Mexico prior to its anticipated arrival between Texas and Mexico, it is forecasted to weaken into a post-tropical cyclone after impacting Texas, subsequently bringing precipitation to regions extending from the US midwest to upper midwest.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), there have been 109 tropical systems making landfall in Texas since records began in 1850. The most recent was Hurricane Nicholas, a Category 1 storm that caused two deaths and $1 billion in damages.
Hurricane Harvey left significant destruction in the Houston area back in 2017.
