Trump Seeks Supreme Court Review of Tariffs Ruling
Donald Trump has requested the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse a lower court decision that declared the majority of his broad trade tariffs unlawful.
Late Wednesday, the former president submitted a petition for review following last week’s federal appeals court ruling in Washington, D.C. The case revolved around his tariff policies, introduced in early April, which placed duties ranging from 10% to 50% on most U.S. imports, causing significant disruptions in global trade.
In a 7-4 decision issued last Friday, the court ruled that Trump had exceeded his executive authority by using a 1977 law meant for national emergencies to justify his tariff measures. The ruling marks the most substantial legal challenge yet to his trade policies, but the tariffs remain in effect until mid-October, allowing time for an appeal.
The Supreme Court is now poised to consider whether to take up the case, though the justices must formally agree to hear it. The administration has requested a decision by September 10.
Court documents indicate that the appeal proposes an expedited schedule, with oral arguments potentially held by November 10, allowing a ruling by year’s end.
