Trump Dismisses Musk’s New Political Party as 'Ridiculous'
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized Elon Musk’s decision to establish a new political party, calling it unnecessary within the country's long-standing two-party system.
Speaking to reporters before a recent trip, Trump stated, “Starting a third party is ridiculous. It has always been a two-party system, and adding another just creates confusion.”
Later, on his social media platform, Trump further commented, “It’s disappointing to see Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails’—essentially becoming a disaster in recent weeks.”
The two were once allies, with Musk previously advising on federal spending cuts through an informal government efficiency initiative earlier this year. However, their relationship soured over disagreements regarding a recently passed fiscal policy, which Musk has called “utterly insane and destructive,” warning it would significantly increase national debt.
Musk announced over the weekend his intention to create the America Party, aiming to challenge both major political parties. Details about the party’s structure or launch timeline remain uncertain, but his posts suggest an initial focus on securing a small number of congressional seats.
EU Commission Holds Talks with Trump on Trade
In a separate development, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reportedly discussed trade issues with Trump, according to a spokesperson.
The spokesperson emphasized efforts to negotiate an agreement with the U.S. before the July 9 deadline to avoid additional tariffs, which the EU views as harmful to both sides.
The U.S. had initially imposed a 20% tariff on EU goods in April but temporarily reduced it to 10% to allow for discussions. Officials now indicate that tariffs may take effect in August if no agreement is reached.
Von der Leyen acknowledged the difficulty in finalizing a deal before the deadline.
