Tunisia's leader, Kais Saied, has re-secured his five-year mandate for a second term amidst one of the country’s lowest voter turnouts recorded historically.
The Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) announced on Monday night that Saied had claimed 90.7% support in Sunday's vote, with an overall participation rate reaching just over 28%.
Ranking second was Ayachi Zammel who obtained about 7.4%, following his seven-year imprisonment after accusations of document manipulation ahead to the election — a week ago. In addition stood ex-lawmaker and Saied's former collaborator, now adversary, Maghzaoui. With more than two dozen candidates disqualified priorly by ISIE, these three contenders were left for electoral confrontation.
This turnout was slightly higher compared to the previous 12% (of about nine million qualified voters) that participated in December’s local elections but remained notably low according to experts — suggesting widespread dissatisfaction among citizens as Tunisia appears trending toward more centralized governance.
Saied expressed his triumph and intentions for the nation's future, saying on state TV earlier Monday evening: "This is a continuation of our revolution; we will purify this country from corruption, treasoners, conspirators.”
Having seized power in 2019 following protest movements that triggered Ben Ali’s departure — who governed for over two decades prior -- Saied has since halted parliament's function and facilitated a referendum providing him with broad authorities. This came after several opposition figures, including former MP Ferjani were detained along with continued restriction on their communication with family members or legal advisors.
