This South Asian nation of 170 million inhabitants is interlaced by numerous rivers, and it's been grappling with increased flood occurrences in the past years.
The shifting climate patterns have led to unpredictable rainfall and accelerated melting of glaciers upstream from the Himalayas.
In Shahjadur town, a northern locality, two teenage boys perished when they fell victim to floodwaters as their boat capsized. According to police chief Sabuj Rana, there were nine abo on the vessel; seven managed to reach safety, but the other two lacked swimming skills and drowned.
Additional fatalities occurred in Kurigram district after individuals encountered electrocution due to live wires entangled with their boats amidst flooding waters, as reported by Agence-France Presse.
Kurigram's chief law enforcement officer stated that three more deaths were caused by separate incidents linked to the flood crisis in various areas of the country.
The administration has established hundreds of shelters for displaced residents and provided relief supplies, such as food, to districts affected by rising waters, particularly those situated in the north region.
Seventeen out of Bangladesh's 64 administrative divisions have been impacted, with over two million individuals affected by the floods, according to disaster management ministry secretary Kamrul Hasan. He also warned that conditions could deteriorate further as the Brahmaputra river surged above its safe levels in some regions.
Kurigram's most severely impacted areas reported a staggering 80% of homes submerged under floodwaters, with residents like local councillor Abdul Gafur emphasizing the acute scarcity of drinkable water alongside rice and oil supplies.
Bangladesh is currently experiencing its annual summer monsoon season, which accounts for 70-80% of the nation's yearly precipitation while also bringing regular flooding incidents and landslides, with scientists attributing climate change to an increase in intensity and irregularity.
