Israeli air and naval operations continued their assault on Gaza while UK foreign secretary David Lammy reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire during a trip to Jerusalem.
Following two days of intense attacks, including one in a humanitarian area within southern Gaza that resulted in the deaths of at least 90 people when Israeli forces targeted Hamas' military chief, Mohammed Deif, tensions have increased amid ongoing negotiations for peace.
Despite claims from some Israeli officials suggesting Deif was injured during the attack, it has further complicated diplomatic efforts aiming to reach a ceasefire. Jihad Taha, spokesperson for Hamas, emphasized that such violent incidents will undoubtedly affect the negotiation process in an interview on Sunday.
Qatari negotiators have expressed their determination to overcome this latest challenge and continue discussions with Hamas, despite concerns over potential obstacles resulting from the events involving Deif's safety. They pointed out instances where Hamas demonstrated resilience in past conflicts, such as after an Israeli strike that claimed 120 lives within a Gaza refugee camp last October and the assassination of Saleh al-Arouri, founder of Hamas' military wing, in Beirut earlier this year.
Negotiations continue between Israel’s Mossad security agency and Hamas, facilitated by Qatar, Egypt, and the CIA chief, as part of an effort to secure the release of hostages held since October 7th. Earlier talks led to the liberation of some prisoners in November; however, subsequent negotiations for a second round remain challenging.
Despite ongoing disagreements between Hamas and Israeli officials over specific terms of potential ceasefires, UK foreign secretary David Lammy has persistently advocated for an immediate halt to hostilities while engaging with various parties involved in the conflict during his time in Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, far-right members within Netanyahu's cabinet continue their stance against compromising on the issue of ceasefire and prisoner release, even threatening potential consequences for themselves politically should they oppose such agreements.
