A US military pier, constructed just over two months ago as part of an initiative to facilitate sea-based humanitarian aid delivery into Gaza, is expected to be dismantled within the coming days according to recent reports.
The Associated Press (AP) reported that due to weather conditions forcing its relocation several times, the pier will temporarily connect back to the Gaza coastline on Wednesday with operations planned for only a few upcoming days before it is disassembled by US military personnel.
Unnamed sources quoted in the AP story suggested that the structure would be restored briefly enough to transfer accumulated humanitarian aid, currently stored in Cyprus and aboard an offshore floating dock since the pier was rendered non-operational on June 28th due to adverse weather.
There were no immediate responses from US Central Command or the US Agency for International Development, both of which manage the maritime aid route between Cyprus and Gaza. However, humanitarian workers engaged in the project anticipated that it would not continue past July.
The plan to construct a temporary pier was first introduced by Joe Biden during his State of the Union address in March as an auxiliary measure alongside limited aid crossing through Israel's land crossings, although US officials later indicated in June that they expected its operation until August or September.
The eastern Mediterraneran near Gaza has seen more turbulent weather than anticipated this summer season, necessitating multiple relocations of the pier since its placement on May 17th. As a result, aid deliveries have been limited in scope during much of the time it was functional, due to security issues.
The World Food Programme (WFP) halted distribution convoys following an IDF operation on June 9th that freed four hostages but resulted in numerous fatalities among Palestinians. With a day's operations to clear accumulated aid from the shore, WFP has maintained its suspension of convoy operations pending further security assessments.
Over its brief two-month operational period, approximately 8,800 metric tons or around 500 truckloads of aid have been offloaded via this pier - a single day's delivery prior to the commencement of hostilities.
Critics argue that the substantial $230 million project has overshadowed efforts by international entities to pressure Israel into granting more efficient access to Gaza through land crossings, which they contend is vital for reaching and supporting the estimated 2.3 million inhabitants who are largely at risk of a food crisis.
