On Thursday, a letter penned by numerous healthcare professionals who served in Gaza during Israel's recent conflict was delivered to Joe Biden and his family members. The group of doctors and nurses expressed concern over the reported casualty figures from Israel’s assault on Gaza, suggesting that they could be significantly higher than officially documented. They called for a halt in US support towards Israel until peace talks are initiated and an end to hostilities is achieved.
The letter, which was addressed to Joe Biden, First Lady Jill, and Vice President Kamala Harris among others, detailed the medical professionals' observations during their service at several Gaza hospitinas. They highlighted cases of apparent disregard for international humanitarian laws by the use of US-supplied weaponry in Israel.
The group comprised 45 surgeons, ER doctors, and nurses who had volunteered with organizations including the World Health Organization and other relief agencies. They asserted that they found evidence suggesting a higher death toll than what was officially reported by the Palestinian ministry of health - more than three times the stated figure of over 39,000 casualties, primarily women and children.
The healthcare professionals further emphasized their concern about widespread illness and injuries in Gaza following Israel's attack. They argued that epidemics were on the rise due to displacement and lack of basic amenities like water and sanitation facilities. The letter also addressed accusations of sympathy for a previous event involving Hamas, reassuring that their primary concern lies with current conditions in Gaza.
The group made an appeal to Biden and Harris, requesting the withdrawal of material support from Israel until peace talks are established and casualties stop escalating. The letter concluded by detailing personal experiences of some healthcare providers who had served at the frontlines during both conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.
