The Biden administration will resume the delivery of 500lb bombs to Israel while continuing to hold back on providing larger 2,000lb bombs due to concerns over their potential use in densely populated areas like Gaza. A US official disclosed this information following a pause in shipments earlier this year as part of the administration's concern regarding these weapons' deployment during the recent conflict.
In May, there was hesitation surrounding the distribution of both 2,000lb and 500lb bombs owing to potential implications for civilian areas if used in military operations within Gaza. The US government expressed specific apprehensions about such heavy weaponry being utilized near Rafah, where a substantial population was displaced due to the conflict.
An anonymous official stated that their primary concern focused on the possible use of 2,000lb bombs in sensitive regions within Gaza, particularly as part of Israel's military campaign there, which they claimed had concluded.
However, the administration clarified that its concerns were not about the 500lb bombs, and these are being transported alongside larger weapons previously delayed. A US representative confirmed this decision to Israeli officials but maintained reservations regarding further shipments of the heavier bombs.
This development follows previous reports where Israel has continued receiving a regular supply of American military equipment despite one halt in delivery. Between October and June, various types of munitions, including 2,000lb bombs and smaller-caliber weapons, were transferred by US authorities to support Israeli operations during the conflict.
As the war's repercussinas continue to be scrutinized internationally due to a high casualty count and widespread destruction in Gaza, discussions surrounding arms transfers remain critical components of this ongoing situation between Israel and Palestine.
