On Tuesday, it was reported that the US government has impeded UK's ability to hold court proceedings on Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean. This action pertained to a case involving over 100 asylum seekers from Sri Lanka who have been residing there for nearly a year without proper documentation or legal recourse.
The British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), which includes Diego Garcia and is under UK's governance, was scheduled to host the BIOT Supreme Court session on Monday with plans for Tuesday to discuss allegations of unlawful detention. The asylum seekers, having fled persecution in Sri Lanka, arrived at Diego Garcia after a failed voyage intended for Canada in October last year and were subsequently rescued by British naval vessels and taken to the island.
enasque conditions have persisted since their arrival; they've been living within a confined camp that is rat-infested and lacking adequate facilities, with an overall size comparable to a football field. Their plea for relocation has yet to be addressed by any party involved in the matter.
The island serves as a leased area of Diego Garcia for US military purposes; however, due to restrictions placed on certain parts of the island, access was denied when the BIOT court planned their visit. According to Nishi Dholakia, Deputy Commissioner of Biot, the US authorities have not permitted entry onto military flights nor provided accommodation or sustenance until "security and operational concerns are satisfactorily resolved".
US officials indicated a willingness to reconsider requests if any alterations could be made to ensure security. Meanwhile, a video-linked session in London took place on the same day as an attempt by some of the affected individuals to bring attention to their dire situation; one man experienced fainting episodes during this event.
Representative Chris Buttler KC emphasized that the cancellation had exacerbated conditions for the asylum seekers, who have resorted to self-harm in despair over their circumstances on the island. Tessa Gregory of Leigh Day solicitors called it an "extraordinary affront" and expressed hope for a prompt resolution by the new foreign secretary, David Lammy.
Amidst these proceedings occurring just before general elections led by then Prime Minister David Cameron to newly appointed Foreign Secretary David Lammy, UK government officials stated that ensuring the welfare of migrants residing in Biot remains paramount.
