In her 43rd grand slam event, 11 and a half years after making her first major appearance, Donna Vekic secured her debut in the grand slam semi-final on Tuesday with a triumph over Lulu Sun. With an impressive win of 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, she ended Sun's remarkable journey and earned a spot in her first ever grand slam semifinal. Vekic managed to hit 11 aces while facing six double faults during the match.
After enduring a challenging contest that tested her limits, Vekic emerged victorious, setting up an exciting semi-final against either Jasmine Paolini of Italy or American Emma Navarro.
“The match was tough and I gave it my all,” said the exhausted but elated Vekic after the victory. “She pushed me to my limits, but in the end, perseverance paid off.”
Vekic's path to this achievement has been filled with obstacles, from knee surgery and plantar fasciitis to mental exhaustion following her underwhelming performances. Despite doubts about continuing at such a high level just weeks before the French Open in May, Vekic ultimately overcame adversity.
In Paris, she reached the third round but suffered defeat against Olga Danilovic after winning the first set 6-0. However, that loss served as a catalyst for her renewed determination and drive to succeed.
On Tuesday, Vekic's resolve was evident in every moment of her match with Sun, who had made history by being the first New Zealand woman to reach the quarterfinals in the Open era. In their previous encounter, Vekic emerged victorious against Emma Raducanu before going up against Lulu Sun on No 1 Court.
Throughout the match, Vekic's tenacity and fighting spirit were evident as she battled back from an early setback to secure her place in the grand slam semi-finals. Her performance served as a source of inspiration for both herself and those who supported tennis in New Zealand.
