Zack Polanski Elected to Lead Greens in England and Wales
Zack Polanski has been elected to lead the Green Party in England and Wales, a result that signals a shift toward his vision of transforming the party into a broader-based movement focused on environmental advocacy.
Polanski, previously the deputy leader and a Green representative on the London Assembly, secured 20,411 votes in the internal election, defeating Adrian Ramsay and Ellie Chowns, who received 3,705 votes as a joint leadership bid. Ramsay and Chowns are among the party’s four current members of parliament.
The outcome had been anticipated by many within the party, marking a potential turning point in its strategy. Instead of a gradual focus on increasing elected representatives, the Greens may now pursue a more outspoken and media-oriented approach under Polanski’s leadership.
While Polanski has emphasized the importance of electoral progress, his strategy includes gaining greater visibility through direct and sometimes confrontational engagement with the media.
Ramsay and Chowns had recognized Polanski’s communication strengths—he previously worked as an actor—but expressed concern that his more strongly left-leaning stance could alienate moderate voters, particularly in the rural constituencies they serve.
