Student life presents many challenges. Forming new friendships can be difficult. Completing assignments is demanding. Handling administrative tasks is tedious. Managing finances is tough. Even deciding on clothing choices beyond basic options seems to be a struggle for some.
For today's students, artificial intelligence offers a way to navigate these complexities with ease. Those struggling with an essay, uncertain about career paths, or in need of meal ideas using limited ingredients can turn to AI for assistance. It can analyze questions, provide structured responses, and suggest solutions—whether crafting a polished paper, composing a letter, or proposing a simple recipe.
This insight comes from observing the interactions of three undergraduates who allowed access to their conversations with an AI tool over 18 months. Each query and response revealed the extent to which students rely on this technology.
Concerns over AI use in education have surged, with some calling it a fundamental challenge to academic integrity. Shortly after its release in 2022, studies indicated that 90% of U.S. college students utilized AI for assignments. A similar study this year found 92% of UK students using AI in some capacity, with almost 20% incorporating AI-generated text directly into their work.
Since its launch, this AI tool rapidly gained millions of users and remains widely accessed. Student engagement typically dips during summer breaks but resumes when classes restart. Many see AI as a way to simplify studies, interpret difficult material, and enhance their writing. Once students recognize its utility for one task, they often turn to it for others—each request leading to more reliance.
The three students who shared their AI interactions are in their second year at a leading UK university. One studies politics, another history, and the third, originally in mathematics, switched to computer science after consulting the tool extensively. Their experiences, though not representative of all students, provide insight into how AI is shaping academic habits.
Their logs reveal a mix of academic inquiries and casual questions—evidence of how deeply integrated AI has become in student life.
