"6.0 magnitude quake near Jalalabad leaves at least nine dead in Afghanistan"

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan, resulting in nine fatalities and multiple injuries.

The tremor occurred at 11:47 p.m. on Sunday, with its epicenter located 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, according to the US Geological Survey. The shallow depth of 8 kilometers increased the potential for greater destruction.

Details on the full extent of the damage were not immediately confirmed. However, Ajmal Darwaish, a spokesperson for Nangarhar’s health department, reported that in addition to the nine deaths, 25 people were hurt.

Twenty minutes later, a second quake with a magnitude of 4.5 hit the same region.

Afghanistan experienced another powerful seismic event on 7 October 2023, when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake was followed by strong aftershocks. The ruling authorities estimated the death toll at over 4,000, while the UN reported approximately 1,500 fatalities—marking one of the country’s worst natural disasters in recent years.

This is a developing story. Further updates will follow.
