Former FBI Director James Comey Faces Legal Proceedings Amid Political Controversy
The legal case involving former FBI Director James Comey emerged as Attorney General Pam Bondi faced Senate questioning yesterday over accusations that the Justice Department is being used to target political adversaries of Donald Trump.
During a five-hour hearing, Bondi avoided discussing many of the administration’s contentious actions despite repeated inquiries from Democratic senators. When pressed, she redirected criticism toward members of the minority party, at times referencing the ongoing government shutdown to accuse them of failing their duties.
“You supported shutting down the government, yet you’re here now. Meanwhile, law enforcement officers aren’t receiving their pay,” Bondi responded after Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, the committee’s top Democrat, challenged the administration’s justification for deploying the National Guard to Chicago.
“I wish you cared for Chicago as much as you oppose President Trump,” she added. “If you won’t protect your constituents, the president will.”
In his opening remarks, Durbin accused Bondi of causing lasting harm to the Justice Department.
“The actions taken since January 20, 2025, would shock even President Nixon,” he said. “This is your legacy, Attorney General Bondi. In just eight months, you have reshaped the Justice Department and left a permanent mark on American history. It will take years to undo.”
Democrats raised particular alarm over the charges against Comey, which followed public demands from Trump for Bondi to prosecute his opponents. The former prosecutor assigned to the case was reportedly dismissed after refusing to pursue charges.
Bondi declined to comment on the specifics of the indictment, calling it a “pending matter,” but noted it had been approved by “one of the most progressive grand juries in the nation.”
