"Gov.uk app debuts with basic features"

A new government app aimed at simplifying administrative tasks will be available for download by millions of UK citizens starting Tuesday, though its initial features will be limited, and the official overseeing its development acknowledged: "The design is not as we would like it to be."

The gov.uk app will be accessible on smartphones for individuals aged 16 and over, serving as a central mobile platform for many government interactions—though it will not cover services from the NHS or HM Revenue and Customs.

Peter Kyle, the science and technology secretary, stated that the initial version would primarily direct users to existing government websites, with expanded capabilities expected by year’s end.

A chatbot using generative artificial intelligence, trained on 700,000 pages of the gov.uk website, is not yet operational. Features allowing users to manage benefits like childcare allowances will also arrive later.

The app will send personal reminders, such as MOT due dates and voter registration deadlines. Weather alerts may also be localized based on a user’s postcode.

The chatbot will rely on a large language model from Anthropic, a prominent AI firm supported by Amazon, though officials confirmed that user data would not be shared with the company.

At launch, the app’s core functions will let users personalize its focus on key government services they use and search related webpages.

“We’re not yet at the level of service we ultimately aim for,” said Kyle, who had promised to release the app in June. “For instance, the design still needs work. But it will make tasks quicker, and locating services easier compared to previous frustrating experiences.”

Developed by the government’s internal tech team, the app is launching as a “minimum viable product.” Later this year, it will integrate a digital wallet, including a digital driving licence. Kyle described this as offering “digital ID and age-verification functions similar to the physical version.”

When asked if future updates could include immigration or criminal justice records, Kyle did not dismiss the possibility, but emphasized, “This is all we are currently planning.”
