Putin Commands Release of Detained American Amid Ukraine Talks with Trump Envoy

Vladimir Putin ordered the release of an American from a Russian jail during discussions with Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, in St. Petersburg on Wednesday. The meeting focused on efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine, highlighting the strengthening ties between Moscow and Washington.

Trump had requested Putin to release Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old former teacher imprisoned in Russia on charges of fighting as a mercenary for Ukraine. Hubbard, who had spent over four years incarcerated, was released unilaterally by Russia, not through a prisoner exchange, which is often customary for such releases. Trump stated on social media that his request to Putin had been honored without any reciprocal action from the United States, describing it as unprecedented.

During their meeting at the Constantine Palace in St. Petersburg, Witkoff praised Putin, calling him a humanitarian, and conveyed Trump's gratitude for a deal to resume Russian diesel exports to the U.S. This interaction contrasted with the critical rhetoric directed at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by senior U.S. officials, including Trump, who has called for Zelenskyy to step down.

Witkoff's visit to Russia followed meetings in Oslo with Zelenskyy and European leaders aimed at reviving stalled peace negotiations, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues into its fifth year. He presented Putin with proposals for a peace deal, signaling ongoing U.S. efforts to broker an end to the conflict.

The relationship between Washington and Kyiv has been strained following Trump's decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel, leading to tensions with Ukraine. Kyiv has reported disruptions in U.S. intelligence-sharing and limitations on its access to the military-grade Starlink satellite network, with differing reports on who ordered these restrictions.

At the meeting, Putin expressed appreciation to Trump and Melania Trump for their involvement in peace efforts, while Witkoff noted some momentum in the peace talks. However, there are limited signs of an imminent resolution, with Ukraine calling for a ceasefire and a halt to attacks on its energy infrastructure, which Russia has yet to agree to.

Despite ongoing conflict, Putin emphasized the potential for enhanced economic ties with the U.S. post-war, including increased exports of fertilizers to the American market. Russian officials announced that a tanker carrying diesel would depart for the U.S. as part of an initial shipment, reflecting the evolving dynamics between the two nations.
