Retailer Investigates After Controversial Shirt Listing Surfaces
The retailer Shein has launched an internal inquiry after its website briefly featured a shirt with an image resembling Luigi Mangione, the individual accused of killing Brian Thompson, head of UnitedHealthcare, in New York last year.
The image appeared to show Mangione in a short-sleeved white shirt, with the item reportedly priced below $10.
In a statement provided to media, the company said: “The image was sourced from an external supplier and was taken down as soon as it was identified.”
It remains unclear exactly when or for how long the shirt was available, given the retailer’s frequent product updates, but online searches for the item surged on Tuesday, and the listing spread across social media.
An archived product description labeled the item as a “Men’s New Spring/Summer Short Sleeve Blue Ditsy Floral White Shirt” and indicated it was nearly out of stock, with only one size remaining.
Mangione, 27, was arrested last December and faces charges related to Thompson’s death. In April, he denied all federal charges, including murder and stalking, and is currently awaiting trial. Prosecutors have stated they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.
Following the incident, some critics of the U.S. healthcare system portrayed Mangione as a symbolic figure, with supporters gathering outside court hearings and donating to his legal fund. Some online marketplaces, including Etsy, saw a rise in related merchandise bearing his name. Amazon confirmed it had removed such listings from its platform.
