Thailand and Cambodia Reach Ceasefire Agreement, Malaysian PM Announces
Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, according to an announcement by the Malaysian prime minister following peace negotiations.
Anwar Ibrahim, who facilitated discussions between leaders of both nations, stated that the truce will take effect at midnight local time on Monday.
“Both Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding,” Ibrahim said after mediation efforts in Malaysia.
Recent clashes, the most severe in over a decade between the two neighboring countries, have resulted in at least 35 fatalities and displaced more than 270,000 people. Fighting persisted early Monday, just before the scheduled start of talks.
The meeting, held at Ibrahim’s residence in Putrajaya, Malaysia’s administrative capital, included the ambassadors of the US and China. Ibrahim also serves as chair of the regional bloc Asean.
