"Xi Jinping warns of global 'peace or war' choice as Putin and Kim attend military event"

Xi Jinping emphasized the global choice between peace and conflict as he presided over China’s largest military display, joined by Russia’s Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un. The event marked the culmination of diplomatic engagements viewed as a challenge to Western influence.

Putin and Kim, among numerous world leaders, attended the procession of military equipment and personnel, organized to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II, referred to in China as the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

Analysts noted that the rare sight of the three leaders conversing and greeting one another on the red carpet conveyed a message of resistance to the West, particularly as U.S. policies under President Donald Trump have strained international relations.

“Today, humanity faces the choice between peace or war, dialogue or confrontation, cooperation or division,” Xi addressed a crowd exceeding 50,000 in Tiananmen Square, declaring that China remains “steadfast on the correct side of history.”

Without naming specific nations, Xi condemned actions he described as domineering before the military showcase commenced, asserting that China’s progress is “unstoppable.”

“This event signals that, despite Western sanctions against Russia over the conflict in Ukraine, Beijing will not hesitate to support its allies,” remarked Wen-ti Sung of the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub.

China framed the parade as a statement of solidarity with other nations. Kim’s appearance marked his first joint appearance with Xi and Putin at an international gathering and only his second known foreign trip in six years.

The occasion quickly drew a response from Trump, who wrote on his social media platform, “Wishing President Xi and the people of China a memorable celebration. Convey my greetings to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un as you strategize against the U.S.”

Other attendees included Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian and Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing. No prominent Western officials were present. North Korean state media images showed Kim accompanied by his daughter, Kim Ju-ae.

Observers suggest the event was intended to underscore Xi’s sway among nations seeking to alter the Western-dominated international system. It followed shortly after Tianjin hosted a summit for Global South leaders, also attended by Putin.

Analysts remain attentive to whether Xi, Putin, and Kim will hold a formal meeting.

“A trilateral gathering would significantly impact U.S. perceptions, underscoring a possible shift toward a renewed Cold War alignment,” said Lim Chuan-Tiong of the University of Tokyo’s Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia.

“If no such meeting occurs, it may suggest limited coordination among them.”
